Michael Jackson’s Tetris

As pointed out in one of the comments on my previous post one of the characters in Final Tetris is meant to be Michael Jackson, quite topical at the moment.

Anyway, thanks to some work with the Mame Italia guys (who also won this PCB on ebay) the game is now playable. Still no idea who actually made it as there is no copyright notice anywhere in the code or graphics.

Final Tetris

Decided to look at a game called ‘Final Tetris’ It appears to be a korean game running on a Semicom board, although I’m not sure if it was actually produced by SemiCom.

It appears to be protected as the inputs don’t work at the moment.

A Lack of Updates

Its been a good few weeks since the last update here, and unfortunately that does mean very little has been going on. Everything I’ve looked at the past week or so has been rather fruitless with boards not wanting to run custom code, and old bugs still making little sense.

Reip recently found a solution to the sprite overdraw problems in Atomic Robokid and I came up with an alternate implementation of that, however, saying which solution is more hardware accurate isn’t easy (the end results are the same). Atomic Robokid lead me on to looking at Mutant Night (same sprite hardware) which currently has a hack to clear some normal (not overdraw) sprites, but I was unable to find out why the game is not correctly removing those from the spritelist without the hack, a long-standing bug.

Other than that its just been minor cleanups, clones, and checking e-bay for auctions to report to Aaron. If you have any to report please Contact Aaron via the form on mamedev.com. While our stance on this issue may offend some people it is neccessary; people selling / ‘burning’ ROMs and cabinets loaded with MAME represent a serious threat to the project.

I’ve also upgraded the RAM in this PC so I may take the time to look at the HNG64 driver again at some point, although my interest in 3D systems isn’t that high.

I may decide to add some more general content here, similar to Aaron’s movie reviews, although at the moment I’m not sure what, although I am currently looking forward to the Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 expansion pack which will no doubt eat into my time if it actually turns out to be any good (looks promising from the screenshots tho)

There have been interviews with several members of MAMEdev, including myself over at Retroblast, so if you fancy reading a little and haven’t already then head over there.

Just a quiet time of year I guess.
