The supply of not-so-original Korean ‘originals’ has dried up in recent years but when system11 spotted the board for a game called ‘Come Back Toto’ for sale he couldn’t resist buying it.
The game, which attempts to pass itself off as an original 1996 title by ‘SoftClub’ is actually a reskin of Toaplan’s Snow Bros. He dumped it, I emulated it, there was some basic line swapping on all the roms, and a stupid ‘protection’ check (wanted a fixed value returned from a port Snow Bros doesn’t use) but overall getting it working wasn’t much of a challenge. Here are some side-by-side screenshots with Snow Bros.
As you can see all the sprites have been redrawn, the theme changed (you throw little ‘punch’ icons instead of snow), the levels redesigned, and (not visible from the screenshots) the music remixed a little, but it’s the same game running for the most part the same code (with numerous patches and bits added)
I do love it when these things turn up :-)
I apologize for posting in this forum, but I wasn’t sure where else to reach out. Have have any major advances been made to the original Virtua Fighter emulation, specifically the Sega Model 1 board? I gather that there are still a lot of mysteries in this board, but I remember seeing a post a few years ago on YouTube of someone making real progress in the emulation accuracy. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHOluHk2DME) Honestly, this game got me on the emulation scene – will we see any more improvements on rom/model 1 arcade board? I watch these obscure roms being added all the time, but I wish the VF classic could be all it could be. Still grateful for the wonderful work, though. Thanks
Is there a way to change the copyright (dipswitches, ..)?

The first screenshot in the link shows a “licensed to Romstar Inc.” string.
might be a slightly unfinished hack in the screenshot, there is a region dipswitch, but if you enable it in MAME with the set we have you get a corrupt ALL RIGHTS RESERVED text, the ROMSTAR text seems to have been removed by the build we have. (clearly the game never was licensed to ROMSTAR, that’s just a more obvious leftover from Snow Bros in the pictures on that site)
What does the girl in the green cape do? Does she take off her clothes?
Hmm, I wonder if this Toto has anything to do with the also Korean “Toto World 3” for the SEGA Master System: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/korea/part1/company-open.htm
The kid in the title screen looks kinda similar…
